Space Shuttle Experiment to Analyze the Effect of Micro-gravity on Fish Behavior

Client

National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), Johnson Space Center, Houston, Texas

Project Objectives

  • Design and build an automatic fish feeding mechanism and water temperature/pH controller for a space shuttle payload bay experiment to analyze the effect of microgravity on fish behavior

Summary of Project and Results (Non-Confidential)

  • Designed and built a device that would automatically feed fish a prescribed amount of food each day in a micro-gravity environment
  • Designed and built a device that would measure and control the temperature of the water in which the fish were living, while subjected to massive swings in the external environment temperature
  • This experiment eventually flew on the space shuttle Columbia and these devices operated flawlessly
