Development of a Gaseous Hydrogen & Oxygen Burning Rocket Engine

Client

U.S. Naval Postgraduate School

Project Objectives

  • Design and construct a gaseous hydrogen and oxygen rocket engine, and liquid water cooling system
  • The rocket engine was used to generate a supersonic fuel rich exhaust stream for testing passive afterburning control techniques.

Summary of Project and Results (Non-Confidential)

  • Designed and built the gaseous hydrogen fuel and gaseous oxygen oxidizer supply systems for the engine
  • Designed and built the fuel and oxidizer injection and mixing systems for the combustion chamber
  • Designed and built a variable length combustion chamber
  • Designed and machined a variety of isentropic exit nozzles to produce a range of underexpanded and overexpanded exhaust flows
  • Designed and built a water cooling jacket system for the combustion chamber and exit nozzle
  • Create a computer control system using LABVIEW that provided electronic control via a GUI interface of the rocket engine operation
  • The rocket engine performed successfully providing testing of afterburning control techniques
