Project Objectives
- Design and develop a coronary artery plaque particle blood filter for use during angioplasty surgery
- During the procedure of angioplasty surgery, plaque particles occasionally break off during expansion of the stent and can block coronary arteries. The blood filter will capture these particles while allowing blood to pass through the filter.
Summary of Project and Results (Non-Confidential)
- Designed material, pore size, and pore spacing of filter to capture plaque particles but allow blood cells to pass through membrane
- Designed the filter entrance mechanism that would expand to completely fill the coronary artery and capture all blood flow without any leakage
- Designed the sheath and attachment mechanism that would contain the filter while it is inserted in the coronary artery
